Can't connect to a server? Run through this checklist first
Most connection problems come down to a handful of causes. Work through these in order.
1. Is the server online?
Check the status dot on its page. If it's offline, wait and try again later.
2. Right edition, right address
- Java: paste the address into Multiplayer > Add Server. The port defaults to 25565.
- Bedrock: enter the address and the port (usually 19132) in Servers > Add Server.
- Use the copy button on the listing instead of retyping.
3. Right version
"Outdated client" or "Outdated server" means a version mismatch. Match the version shown on the listing, or update your game.
4. Whitelist or ban
Some servers only let approved players in. Check their rules.
5. Your network
School and work networks often block game traffic. Try a phone hotspot, and switch off any VPN.
