Learn how to join a Minecraft Java Edition server: copy the IP, add it in Multiplayer, pick the right version and fix connection errors fast.
What you need
To play on a public server you need Minecraft: Java Edition on a computer (Windows, macOS or Linux), a Mojang or Microsoft account that owns the game, and the server's address. The address, often called the IP, is the line of text such as play.example.com. Some servers add a port after a colon, like play.example.com:25566. If there is no port, the default of 25565 is used.
Joining step by step
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and, before you press Play, check which game version the server uses. On MCServerShare the version is listed on every server card and server page.
- Choose or create an installation for that version if the server needs a specific one. Many servers accept a range of versions, shown as 1.18 - 26.2 for example, so the newest version in the range is usually the safest pick.
- Start the game and click Multiplayer. Accept the multiplayer warning the first time.
- Click Add Server (or Direct Connection to join once without saving).
- Paste the server address into the Server Address box. Give it any name you like and press Done.
- Select the server in your list. A green bar means it answered; click Join Server.
Using the copy button
Every listing here has an address button. One click copies the exact address, so you never mistype a character. Paste it with Ctrl+V on Windows and Linux or Cmd+V on a Mac.
Whitelists, resource packs and rules
Some servers use a whitelist, which means the owner must approve your username before you can join. Their listing or Discord will explain how to apply.
A server may offer a resource pack. Accepting it changes textures or sounds while you are on that server only. You can decline and still play on most servers.
Read the rules when you first spawn. Most servers have a rules command or a sign near the start.
Cracked and offline-mode servers
Servers that let you play without a paid account are called cracked or offline-mode servers. They are less secure because usernames are not verified, so anyone can pretend to be you, and many do not allow online-mode accounts at all. We recommend servers that verify accounts, and we do not list servers that exist to share pirated game files.
If it will not connect
The most common causes are the wrong version, a mistyped address, or the server being offline. Our guide to fixing connection problems walks through each fix in order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I join a Minecraft server on Java Edition?
Open Minecraft Java Edition, choose Multiplayer, click Add Server, paste the server address and click Done, then select the server and press Join Server. Make sure your game version matches the server's version.
What is the default Minecraft Java server port?
25565. If a server uses that port you only need to type the address. If it uses a different port, add it after a colon, for example play.example.com:25566.
Why does it say Outdated client or Outdated server?
Your game version does not match the server. Create a launcher installation for the version the server lists, or update your game if the server supports the newest version.
Do I need a paid account to join a Minecraft server?
Most public servers require a paid Minecraft: Java Edition account because they verify accounts. Servers that allow unverified accounts are less secure, and we do not recommend them.
