Fix 'Failed to connect to server', 'Outdated client', timeouts, unknown host and login errors in Minecraft with this step-by-step checklist.
First, check the basics
- Is the server online? The status dot on its page shows the last check.
- Is the address typed exactly? Copy it with the copy button instead of retyping.
- Is it the right edition? Java and Bedrock are separate and use different ports.
"Outdated client" or "Outdated server"
Your game version does not match the server. For Java, create a launcher installation for the version the server lists, or update to the latest version if the server accepts a range. For Bedrock, update the game from your store.
"Failed to connect to the server" or timeouts
- The server may be restarting. Wait a minute and try again.
- Check the port. Java defaults to 25565 and Bedrock to 19132; a different port must be typed after a colon (Java) or in the Port box (Bedrock).
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot. Some school and work networks block game traffic.
- Temporarily switch off a VPN or proxy and try again.
"Unknown host" or "Can't resolve hostname"
The address is mistyped or the domain no longer exists. Make sure there are no spaces or extra characters, and compare it to the address on the listing.
"You are not whitelisted" or "You are banned"
Whitelisted servers only let approved players in, so apply through their website or Discord. A ban is the server's decision, and the staff are the only ones who can lift it.
"Invalid session" or login problems
Close the game and launcher fully, then sign in again. Make sure your account owns the game and that the launcher is signed in to the same account.
Lag and rubber-banding
Lag is usually the distance between you and the server, not your computer. Pick a server in your region, close bandwidth-heavy apps, and use a wired connection if you can.
Still stuck?
Ask on our community forum, or tell the server's staff exactly what error you see and which version you are using. If a server shows online here but nobody can join, tell us by reporting it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Minecraft say Failed to connect to the server?
The server may be offline or restarting, the address or port may be wrong, a firewall may block the connection, or your version may not match. Check each in turn.
How do I fix Outdated client?
Use a launcher installation that matches the server's version, or update your game if the server supports the latest version.
What does Unknown host or Can't resolve hostname mean?
The address is mistyped or the domain no longer exists. Copy the address from the listing instead of typing it.
Why is there lag or rubber-banding?
Mostly distance to the server and your connection quality. Choose a server in your region and use a wired connection if you can.
